Doom Eternal is the upcoming sequel to 2016’s Doom, which itself is a re-imagining of the 1993 game of the same title. Upon release, Doom was met with widespread critical and commercial success. Many fans consider it one of the best games of 2016, and some have gone so far as to call it one of best games of the 2010’s.

The new trailer begins by showing players that Earth has been ravaged by demons. This suggests that the new game will take place some amount of time after Doom, which ended with the Doom Slayer on Mars. A voiceover lets players know that “There is only one dominant life form in this universe, and it carries steal barreled sword of vengeance.” The Doom Slayer then pumps his shotgun, letting players know that he is that dominate life form.

From that point forward the trailer kicks into overdrive. The Doom Slayer rips through demons, using both weapons from the old game alongside a couple of new toys. The BFG and the double barreled shotgun, both fan favorite weapons, make an appearance. New weapons include a grenade launcher of some sort, and a new knife weapon for melee combat. The trailer ends with the Doom Slayer holding an energy sword, a new weapon which promises to bring slicing and dicing action to the shooter.

The trailer also highlights a number of new Glory Kills. Returning fans will remember that Glory Kills are pre-rendered instant kills that the player can trigger by melee attacking enemies. Players who loved the brutality of Glory Kills in the last Doom game will certainly be excited by these new ones.

Fans can also see some of Doom Eternal’s new platforming mechanics featured prominently in the trailer. Doom’s designers have said they put an emphasis on movement in the new game, in order to increase the pace and challenge of combat. It looks awesome in the trailer, and will hopefully be a welcome improvement in the new game.

Doom Eternal looks like it will pick up where Doom left off, both improving on the previous game, while keeping the core mechanics that players love. Fans who are anxiously awaiting the new game can always check out some wholesome Doom and Animal Crossing Memes to fill the time until release.

Doom Eternal will be released on March 20, 2020, for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version is planned for later in the year.
