A mod group calling itself HDT Team has created a new add-on for the original Doom that actually brings elements of the first Halo game from 2001 into the mix. The description on ModDB says that “Halo: Doom Evolved” brings the “classic sandbox themed gameplay” of the latter into the former, incorporating the weapons and other aspects from Bungie’s 21-year-old game.

Alongside 1993’s Doom, Halo is considered one of the most innovative first person shooters ever made. While the former helped set the scene and usher in the early days of the genre, the latter helped ensure that FPS games on consoles would enjoy a lucrative lifespan. Up until Bungie launched the game on the original Xbox, first-person shooters were generally considered to be more suited to PC, but with Halo, that all changed and it became one of Microsoft’s flagship series.

HDT Team’s crossover mod not only brings these two titans together, but it also shows just how much people love modding id Software’s classic game. It’s also not the first instance of fans trying to combine two influential titles into one add-on. Another person is currently working on a mod that is a cross between Doom and Quake. The original Quake, the gothic follow-up to Doom 2, was another landmark entry in the genre by id, taking what the studio had learned with its previous projects and pushing the technology that little bit further with fully 3D models and that haunting Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.

As a classic run and gun game, Doom has stood the test of time. It’s obviously aged significantly since launch, and the technology is a yawning gulf away from what development cycles were like back in the early to mid 90s, but it’s still influencing other games and studios to this day. The same could also be said for Halo, which was pretty much the progenitor of the first-person shooter coming to consoles.

Doom was originally released in December 1993 for multiple platforms and has been ported to many systems over the years.
