Anyone who’s ever played the original releases knows there are an almost endless array of mods for Doom. There are even those that completely convert it into a different experience entirely, pretty much changing it into a brand-new game distant from the source material. After almost three decades, many would be forgiven for thinking that just about every modification idea has been implemented, but it seems pretty clear even at this stage that there are still a lot of creative types willing to share their Doom-like projects.

As spotted by PCGamer, a user who goes by FreewayHere is in the midst of making their own mod for Doom that will feature Hank Hill as the main protagonist. While screenshots suggest the gameplay will still be the same as the classic release, there are a number of changes that have been made which put it in line with the Mike Judge show. For instance, as well as replacing the Doomguy’s face with Hank’s own pixelated version, it also looks as though there will be a lawn mower and BBQ grill added, perhaps as weapons the player can choose. The creator is also swapping out the visuals of barrels and replacing them with propane tanks, as well as creating their own levels. Currently, there is no release date for the mod.

King of the Hill is one of the most beloved animated shows of a previous generation. Running for over 12 years, the show ended in 2009, though not before winning two Emmys, and was voted one of the best TV shows of all time by Time magazine. It seems odd that the otherwise patriotic and soft-spoken Hank would take on a horde of demons, but it will be interesting to see the finished project.

With id software allegedly working on a new game, there’s a chance Doom could once again be the focus of the gaming industry, although it’s not clear what project the studio has in mind just yet. With so many mods still coming out after all these years, it really hammers home just how important the original 1993 release was not only for the first-person shooter genre, but for video games in general.

Doom released in December 1993 for multiple platforms and has been ported to many systems.
