Here’s what’s newly known about Dragon Ball Z’s Project Z, which isn’t the game’s final title. The action RPG will focus on the story of Dragon Ball Z as we know it. That includes the fight with Raditz and the training of Gohan through the Saiyan and Frieza sagas, with players experiencing the game through Goku’s eyes. The game’s developer has also been confirmed to be CyberConnect2, best known for the .hack and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Finally, the game’s release date is confirmed for 2019.
The Dragon Ball Z Project Z trailer doesn’t offer much further clarification, but it does provide a glimpse at the visual style players can expect. Much of the trailer seems to be in-engine cinematics, featuring a level of detail somewhere between Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball Xenoverse. However, towards the end of the trailer what looks to be a bit of gameplay is teased. Goku is seen walking through an assortment of locations, which emphasizes that there is some RPG to be found in Project Z.
Plenty of questions remain regarding just what kind of game this Dragon Ball Z action RPG will be. Given the developer’s past games including Asura’s Wrath and the .hack series, it’s clear it can work well within the action and RPG genres. But how those two genres will be brought together and whether CyberConnect2 can maintain that authentic Dragon Ball Z feel is yet to be determined. With a launch in 2019, however, odds are fans will be hearing much more about Project Z relatively soon.
Dragon Ball Z - Project Z is planned for release in 2019 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
