Players will be able to use this ability and its later iterations throughout every fight they encounter, but it’s important to understand how this works. First, it naturally won’t be unlocked in the story until players defeat Frieza, as this is the first moment that Goku every ascends to Super Saiyan in DBZ. Later on, Future Trunks will appear and be able to use the transformation, with other playable characters like Gohan and Vegeta following suit eventually in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. But how does a player do it?

How to Go Super Saiyan
First, players need to carefully understand how their back buttons/bumpers work in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. The controls are a bit complex and confusing, but essentially, players have a few in-combat palettes and need the transformation palette. The PS4’s L1/Xbox One’s LB brings up the DBZ: Kakarot Super Attack menu, while Up on the D-pad will bring out items.
But the transformation palette corresponds by holding the back buttons (PS4’s L2+R2, Xbox One’s LT+RT). Between cycling through menus, this can get confusing and sometimes the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot character will guard (as that’s LT/L2), so players will want to be mindful of which buttons they are pressing.
Before that, though, players will need to go to the Characters tab in the main menu and make sure that the transformation is assigned via the “Super Attack Palette” option. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot players will just need to tab right to get to the transformation pallete. But once players have this, it’s practically a constant, but players will want to watch their Ki as it will other wise drain really quickly. This is especially the case for Super Saiyan 3 Goku.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
