The three new support characters confirmed for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot include Android No. 18 as well as the mischievous pair of Trunks and Goten, who all really come into play in Dragon Ball Z starting with the Majin Buu Saga. It’s likely that the three characters will actually make just two different supports, as Trunks and Goten will likely be grouped into one as the Gotenks fusion.

Support characters in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot are an interesting feature. While players will be able to select from half of a dozen DBZ fighters for their playable character, they’ll also be able to choose from a range of supports, who will be called for assistance in combat. They’ll even be able to have abilities used by the player, even though they won’t be wholly controlled.
Other support-only characters announced for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot include many of the Z-fighters. Krillin, Tien Shinhan, Chaiotzu, and Yamcha are already confirmed to be support-only characters. Like in the Dragon Ball Z anime, they’ll do what they can to help but aren’t going to be taking any villains out other than Saibamen. Playable characters like Piccolo are also believed to work as support characters, though more information is needed about that feature.
Support characters offer a great way to include more Dragon Ball Z characters in the game outside of just being NPCs. It would be odd for characters like young Trunks and Goten to not be part of some big fights. But at the same time, it’d be hard to justify making them playable protagonists. Supports fill that area in-between. It’s a great way to Dragon Ball Z fans to see all of their favorite characters in the action.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot releases January 17, 2020, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
