A franchise with a storied history and devoted fanbase in Japan, and until recently only a niche fandom in the West, Dragon Quest is a series that has captured the hearts of JRPG fans for literal generations. The mainline games haven’t strayed from their traditional formula much over the years. The franchise’s bread and butter comes from a by-the-numbers plot of good versus evil, some colorful characters, and a simple-but-satisfying turn-based battle system. These are the hallmarks of a main Dragon Quest game. Outside of the mainline, the franchise is willing to experiment a bit more. From the well-received Dragon Quest Builders, to a middling gacha mobile game, there are other avenues to explore in the Dragon Quest world, hence the upcoming anime.

Though little is known at this time, Square Enix will be hosting a special program on YouTube to offer information on the voice cast for Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai on May 27th. The anime is based on the best-selling manga of the same name, that was previously adapted into an anime back in 1991. The story follows the young lad, Dai, who lives on an island with (friendly) monsters before venturing off on his own to be a hero.

The Adventure of Dai manga is praised for its story and characters, and has sold millions of copies in Japan. The manga was produced by Riku Sanjo, an artist who is often compared to Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball and character designer for Dragon Quest.

The anime is scheduled to air in the fall, and while COVID-19 has put a lot of the anime industry on hold, fans are hopeful it won’t affect series down the line, like The Adventure of Dai.
