Drinkbox Studios was founded in 2008 and has grown a cult following in the past decade thanks to its unique Metroidvania series Guacamelee. Both Guacamelee and its sequel are non-linear 2D platformers that are inspired heavily by Mexican folklore. In 2016, the studio stepped outside of its comfort zone to release Severed, a first-person dungeon-crawling action RPG that was initially exclusive to PlayStation Vita before eventually coming to iOS, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Switch later. The game focused entirely on the device’s touch screen, which was used to traverse and for combat. In 2018, Drinkbox returned with Guacamelee 2, and has since remained silent, working on another new IP.

Now the studio has finally returned with Nobody Saves the World, a stylish action RPG that sees players transforming its characters into different forms including a rat and a ranger, while mixing abilities to create custom builds unique to their play style. Its pitch alone makes it stand apart from the rest of Drinkbox’s other work. Better yet, the game is coming to Xbox consoles, cloud, and PC on Xbox Game Pass upon its release.

The game centers around dungeon-crawling gameplay similar in approach to other indie titles such as The Binding of Isaac. That said, the game is not a rogue-like. During the stream, Drinkbox Studios claimed that players will be required to complete certain quests to unlock new forms in order to learn their unique mechanics, after which they will be allowed to mix their abilities with specific character forms in order to access new areas.

Drinkbox Studios revealed that Nobody Saves the World’s art style was inspired by the likes of Ren & Stimpy and Garbage Pail Kids to appear “uncomfortable,” a distinct departure from the visuals of its previous games. The game will also feature over 25 dungeons including a UFO and gingerbread house. Players will be offered the option to create a new build after failing each dungeon, similar to games like Hades. Drinkbox also revealed that the game does not emphasize bosses like its previous games.

Nobody Saves the World is in development for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
